The function and principle of transformers
Author:
Transformers are one of the indispensable equipment in power transmission and distribution systems. This article will introduce the function and working principle of transformers, helping readers understand and appreciate the working principle and application of this important power equipment.
1、 The function of a transformer:
A transformer is a device used to change the voltage of alternating current. Its main function is to convert the voltage in the input circuit into the required voltage in the output circuit through the principle of electromagnetic induction. Transformers can boost high voltage to higher voltage or reduce high voltage to lower voltage to meet different power transmission and application needs.
1. Increase or decrease voltage: Transformers can reduce high voltage to lower voltage, suitable for supplying low voltage or household electricity to users. On the contrary, it can also raise low voltage to higher voltage to meet the needs of long-distance power transmission and transmission lines.
2. Energy saving and power loss: The use of transformers can reduce energy loss during power transmission. By increasing the voltage of the transmission line and reducing the current, the transmission loss in the line can be reduced. This is very important for long-distance power transmission and reducing energy waste.
3. Power conversion and distribution: Transformers are important components of the power system, which convert and distribute the electrical energy generated by power plants appropriately to meet the needs of household, industrial, and commercial electricity.
2、 Working principle of transformer:
The working principle of transformers is based on electromagnetic induction. It is mainly composed of two coils, one is called the main coil (also known as the primary coil), and the other is called the secondary coil (also known as the secondary coil). These two coils are tightly wound together, but not directly connected.
1. Operating principle: When the input current passes through the main coil, the generated magnetic field will pass through the secondary coil and induce voltage through magnetic induction, thereby generating voltage in the secondary coil. This achieves voltage conversion. Transformers require an AC power source during operation because they are only effective for AC power.
2. Voltage conversion ratio: Transformers achieve the conversion between input voltage and output voltage by controlling the turns ratio of the main and secondary coils. According to the different turns ratio, the input voltage can be increased or decreased to the desired output voltage.
Conclusion: Transformers, as indispensable equipment in power transmission and distribution systems, play an important role and have significant applications. Through the principle of electromagnetic induction, transformers achieve voltage conversion and regulation in power systems. By changing the ratio of turns between the input coil and the output coil, it can provide voltage outputs suitable for various electricity needs. The widespread application of transformers enables efficient and safe transmission and distribution of electricity, providing reliable power support for our daily life and industry.
